Patios awnings are a great way to protect yourself and your outside furnishings from both the sun and rain. They can also protect indoor spaces by providing shade for the sunlight that normally comes through windows so that furnishings and carpets don’t fade but the room remains bright. Not only that, but a patio awning can improve both the look of your home and the patio itself.

And yet, just like any permanent fixture inside or outside your home, you will need to clean the awning every now and then to ensure that it keeps looking its best.

When cleaning a patio awning it is important that you read the instructions that came when the awning was installed. Different manufactures will have different cleaning requirements and depending on the environment in which you live there may be special instructions that you need to follow.

But don’t fret too much. Cleaning a patio awning is not a complicated task. Wipe down the frames with a soft and slightly damp cloth to ensure that you remove any of the dust or dirt that has accumulated here. By doing this on a regular basis you will not need to scrub off any hard crusted dirt. These frames can often gather cobwebs, especially the awning hasn’t been used in awhile. These are easily removed.

Every awning will have different requirements. For example, if you have a fabric awning then you should use soap and water to wipe down the cloth. Most awnings are waterproof and are therefore usually easily cleaned with just a little bit of water or even with a hose. However, you need to keep on top of the cleaning otherwise stubborn grit and grime can develop which can be difficult to remove.

If you have a retractable patio awning then it is important to retract the awning when the weather turns bad or if there are a high winds. Not only with this protect the awning from damage but will also help keep the dirt or leaves off. Also, when cleaning a retractable awning you should make sure the awning’s fabric is dry before retracting to avoid mould accumulating. This is why cleaning in hot weather is usually a good idea.

In summary, the best way to keep your patio awning clean is to clean often. This way you will avoid the build of hard to remove dirt, grime and stains that can end up ruining what should be a great looking and functional piece for your patio.
